Steps towards Canonization
In every canonization of a saint, the Pope's infallibility is somewhat involved, but the object of his judgment is not the declaration that the nominee is in heaven, as many people mean, but that the believers can without any danger for their faith and morals imitate him in their own life. This is the very reason for the lastingness of some long proceedings for the canonizations of the blessed or saints.
The officials of the diocese of Marquette have between 1970 and 1998 presented to the Holy See their Positio or Standpoint of the diocesan bishops, priests and all believers about the saintly life and works of their first Bishop Frederic Baraga. In occasion of this presentation there was already a discussion of some Baraga's human defects, which were sufficiently explained by Fr Bruno Koroshak, then promoter of the cause. The whole discussion and the explanation was then printed as Relatio et vota by the Congregation of Saints in 1999. But there will be yet another discussion about the Baraga's heroic virtues at the presence of the Holy Father, before the official permission of the public cult to Baraga will be allowed.
Although these doctrinal discussions, because of the involvement with the Papal infallibility, have his importance, however for the believers themselves who will never have any occasion to imitate the virtues of a bishop, or even for the priests, who today live in completely different environment, the Baraga's power of intercession seems to be much more interesting. Therefore, in the printed Standpoint of the diocesan Curia, of the year 1998, as much as 62 of his presumed miracles were briefly traced. From them, the then promoter Fr. Bruno selected the case of Bernard Lambert (see ¨The Baraga Bulletin? 1970) which printed on the computer, and fully documented was presented to the Congregation of Saints in the year 2000. The second case was added in 2003. But accordingly to the general rule, for the validity of a miracle, 10 years must elapse, during which the same illness or deformity must not appear.
About some difficulties at Evaluation of Baraga's heroic virtues see: Bruno Korošak, Nekaj težav pri ocenjevanju Baragovih svetniških kreposti, in ?Baragov simpozij v Rimu?, Celje 2000, pp. 289-303.
